Joanne Correira

Owner & Trainer

Joanne is a lifelong animal lover and a certified Dog Wizard. From a young age, she developed a deep connection with animals, often sharing her childhood bedroom with a menagerie of pets. This passion led her to earn a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD.

While Joanne's career journey took her through various roles in finance and IT, culminating in an MBA in 2015, her heart always remained with animals. After retiring from the American Bar Association in 2024, Joanne was finally able to fully embrace her true passion, as a dog trainer with The Dog Wizard.

Joanne considers working with dogs a privilege and is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of both pets and their families. Her motto, "Work hard, play hard," drives her training approach, setting high expectations for every pup she works with. She strives to improve the quality of life for each family and their pets through dedicated, balanced, and personalized training.

A native Washingtonian, Joanne resides in College Park with her wife, Jennifer, and their four rescue animals.

Macey

Spokesdog

Macey's journey began when she was found wandering the Navajo Nation as a puppy. After being taken to a high-kill shelter in New Mexico, a local rescue organization was drawn to her photo and pulled her to safety. Joanne, equally captivated by Macey's picture, worked with the rescue to bring her to College Park, where she now enjoys life with her humans and cat siblings.

Having experienced early homelessness and a series of transitions before finding her forever home, Macey struggled with separation anxiety. After a lot of patience and training, she now finds comfort in her home and with her family.

Macey is a friend to all, and she quickly embraced The Dog Wizard training, even helping new pups as they work through the program. She loves belly rubs, long walks, and chew toys, and she's always ready to support other dogs as they overcome their own fears and find their confidence.

We just finished a 5-week program with Joanne at The Dog Wizard (3 sessions per week), and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Our golden doodle Toño has always been a sweet boy, but he struggled with excitement, jumping on people, pulling on the leash if someone gave him attention, or reacting to other dogs. Not ideal when I’m walking him with my 1-year-old.

We came to Joanne with a clear list of goals: teaching him to “place” and hold it, having calm and controlled walks, tolerating the vacuum, and being able to take him out in public without stress. He accomplished every single one of them. We are still in shock every time we see him hold his place, let us vacuum without interference, or calmly walk by our side in busy environments.

This past weekend we tested it at a vineyard with friends, he stayed calmly placed by our side the entire time, which left everyone who knows him in disbelief. At home, he’s constantly tempted by our 1-year-old’s food and toys, but he doesn’t break from his place until we release him. Truly incredible.

We are so grateful to Joanne for her patience, skill, and guidance. If you’re considering training, we can’t recommend The Dog Wizard College Park enough — it’s been life-changing for our family.

Joanne at The Dog Wizard College Park did a great job with Brody, my 2-year-old Shiba Inu. Anyone who’s had a Shiba knows they’re smart, strong-willed, and fiercely independent, which can make training a serious challenge. Mine definitely fits that description, and I wasn’t sure how much training would actually stick, but after working with Joanne for 15 days (3 times a week for 5 weeks), I could really see a difference in his behavior at home and in public spaces.

She was patient, consistent, and clearly experienced with tougher breeds. She didn’t try to change who he is, which I appreciated, but she helped shape his behavior in a way that makes
our daily routines a lot smoother. He walks better on leash, responds more to commands, and generally listens better than he used to.

Joanne also made sure I understood how to continue the training at home, which made a big difference in keeping the momentum going. She was easy to work with, gave honest feedback, and really seemed to care about Brody’s progress.

If you’re looking for a trainer who knows what they’re doing—especially with independent-minded dogs—Joanne’s the one. 100% recommend!

She trains both the dogs and their owners. We left with tools to keep our pack (k-9 and human) living in harmony. We are looking forward to social events for our silly babies. If ever you need a knowledgeable and compassionate trainer she is the one! Our family thanks you so much.

Was thrilled to Board and Train Chestnut with The Dog Wizard of College Park. Chestnut is a puppy (7-1/2 months old) and he’s a little feisty. After training, he came home more calm and attentive. It’s great because his sister was also trained by Joanne and they’re both familiar with the commands. They also enjoy spending time on their own place mats but also enjoy time with each other. I was also unfamiliar with training dogs using an ecollar. Joanne made me feel more comfortable with the device and it’s made reinforcing the commands a lot easier, along with ensuring the fast recall for them. I also love the ongoing reinforcement we’re going to get from Joanne. She is a great trainer and would definitely recommend people bring their dogs to her.

About The Dog Wizard College Park

Our dog training goes beyond basic commands like Sit, Come, and Down. Our approach focuses on helping your dog make better choices and respond to you instead of their impulses.

We cover all the essential obedience commands you need to communicate effectively with your dog. But more importantly, we teach your dog to stay engaged and follow through with these commands, even in the most distracting environments.

Our goal is to enhance your dog’s understanding of obedience, making it a natural part of their behavior, not just a few tricks they perform when they feel like it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dog Wizard College Park offers a free evaluation. Most locations will even come to you to do one! This enables our trainers to meet you and your dog, go over your training goals and find a program that works for you. Give us a call and we will help you set one up.
The Dog Wizard trainers are well versed in a variety of training tools; from food to collars to remote collars. We know that not all dogs do well with every tool and we will help you decide what tool is best for your dog as well as what tools you’re comfortable with using. At the end of the day, whatever tool you’re comfortable in using will be the one you’re most consistent in using and that’s what’s most important to us.
It is never too late to start teaching your dog new habits. It will take more time and effort than teaching a new puppy but you will love the outcome.

In order to know how long it will take to train your dog, we will need to do a free consultation. During your consultation, we will get to understand what you are looking to gain from the training as well as evaluate your dog to see what we will need to do to get him where you would like him to be. At that point, we will be able to give you a timeline for his training.

We do not have a one size fits all approach to training. Each dog owner team that has a free evaluation will have a customized program designed to fit your specific needs. Because of this, individualized system pricing varies. Give us a call and we will help you set one up
